Into the 21st Century

September 21, 2008 at 11:46 pm (Undefined) ()

So yesterday, I finally had enough of people looking at me like I was from another planet (including my boyfriend’s mom, the IT guy at work, a business client, etc.) and I bought a microwave. I have lived for four of the last five years without a microwave because it really wasn’t that necessary to me to have one. Every once in a while I thought it would be nice to make a bag of microwave popcorn or heat up a pizza pocket in 2 minutes (rather than 45 min in the oven) but overall I was pretty ok with the lack of micro waves in my kitchen.

Now my brand new, 1.1 cubic foot, 1100W GE Microwave oven sits happily on my counter waiting for me to remember to go to the store and get popcorn or pizza pops. That or my famous Fudgy Sauced Pudding (recipe to follow) or caramel sauce to put on ice cream. Right, I need to get a microwave cookbook.

TGIF…

September 20, 2008 at 1:32 am (Undefined) (, , )

Today was an especially long and challenging. I was supposed to go to Nanaimo for work, but late in the evening it was cancelled. I was sooo excited about not getting up at 4am to catch the 6:20am ferry! When I got to work today, I was told that we were going to go ahead with the meeting in Nanaimo. So drive to the ferry, get on the ferry, meet with my boss and discover that we may not actually be able to get our work done, get off on the other side, meet with clients, reschedule for another day (yay work on Sundays), get back on the ferry, drive home. I’m so happy traffic was amazing on the drive home and I got back within an hour.

Now I’m debating what to make for dinner. Should I try making bubble tea? I finally got all the ingredients (even the straws!) The pearls need an hour to boil… hmmmm. Also not such a dinner food. Maybe I can find a good recipe for mushroom cream sauce to toss with orzo and prawns. If I find something, I’ll finally start my recipe page to share.

Kitten!

September 19, 2008 at 12:06 am (Work) (, )

We have a few stray cats at work. Actually I’m told it’s kind of a family of cats. They have been around forever and there was a whole back story that I learnt when I first started working. I was also told their names, but do I remember them? No.

Anyhow, long story short, there are three cats: Grandma, who was caught and spayed; the Boyfriend; and Shadow, who was almost caught but now knows traps are trouble. So, about two or three times a year, always during the summer, Shadow has kittens. She had her last set of kittens about two months ago, but up until today no one at work had seen them. We were starting to get worried that the new kittens hadn’t made it, but today Linda and I saw a little tabby!

The kittens are so cute, I’d love to take one home, if only I had the time to look after it… Apparently the ladies at work have an agreement with a local vet and they catch the kittens (which are actually are quite tame, we can actually pick them up with bare hands sometimes) send them to the vet and then give them to good homes. Or something like that. I’m told that the kittens are very affectionate and love to cuddle… sigh.

Christmas Goal

September 18, 2008 at 5:04 am (Weight) (, )

Last week I decided to make a goal to lose 24 lbs from then until Christmas. Weight Watchers estimates that you can lose 1-2 lbs a week while on the program, so I figured that a goal to lose 1.6 lbs a week until then would be perfect. If I reach my goal, John has said he’ll buy me a day at the spa (including a mani, pedi, massage and lunch). I’ve also decided that if I don’t get to my goal but lose a pound a week, I’ll treat myself to a mini spa day with just a mani and pedi with a friend.

I just got back from my Weight Watchers meeting and I was down 7.2 lbs! And yes, that is a lot to lose in just a week, but I had previously gained 6 lbs, so they were easy pounds to lose. This means I’m well on my way to my Christmas Goal!

2010

September 17, 2008 at 3:24 pm (Plans) (, , )

Who knew that my love of planning would lead me to start planning life in 2010? I better have a great boss who’ll let me get time off to do it all.

First off, it’s 2010, the year of the Vancouver Olympics. Damned if I missed that! I would love to volunteer (maybe I should think about filling out that application form then, eh?) but at least go to some of the live events. Of course my dream would be to go to the opening ceremonies, what better birthday present for an Olympic nut like me?

Next, there was talk with my friends of going on a two week excursion to Scotland and Ireland in April of 2010. The theory being that if we know about it now, we can save up enough to actually be able to afford the trip. I would absolutely LOVE to go visit Ireland and there’s no way I would give up listening to Scottish accents again (on the train from London I would pause my music just long enough to listen to the annoucements after every stop, gosh I’m a geek.)

Finally, it’s Guiding’s 100th anniversary and Mosaic (http://guidingmosaic.com/) is being held in Guelph. It’s a 10 day Guide camp extravaganza and when we told our girls last night about it, they went wild with excitement! So for 10 days in July of 2010, I’ll be wrangling together my band of girls (my gosh, they’ll be teenagers by then, what I have gotten myself into??) for some awesome fun and travel. I’m actually pretty excited about this event too; I’ve never travelled for an international Guiding event. I forsee lots of bottle drives, car washes, chocolate selling, and cookie selling in our future.

So in total, that’s 14 days of Olympics +14 days of Europe + 10 days of Guelph = 38 days / 365, that’s more than 1/10 of my year already planned! That’s also equivalent to over a month off work, before the middle of the year! Not that I have to take too much time to go to the Olympics, but maybe I’ll have to stick to the weekend events. 😦

Hello world!

September 16, 2008 at 11:59 pm (Undefined) ()

So I had this random desire to start a blog. As with all random feelings, I had to follow through.

I claim this place as a place to rant, share, amuse and question. Anything goes here, whatever comes into my head.
